Spain Security: Terrorist Band ETA agreed to its abandonment of armed struggle at a meeting in July.

Europe Security News: According to ETA their Armed Campaign is over.

The end of ETA’s armed struggle was decided probably in Venezuela (according to Spanish newspaper El PAIS) at a meeting of its clandestine executive council which was attended among others by terrorist Josu Veal. The decision was based on the electoral growth of its political arm in the Basque Congress  and also due to the arrest of Mikel Carrera Sarobe. Furthermore, the political sectors in Spain such as the PSE and the PP also could facilitate a conference of mediators.

Despite this, a Metroscopia survey (specially made for the spanish newspaper EL PAIS) says that 53% of the Spanish people distrust and remain skeptical of the announcement of ETA. According to the poll , the definitive cease fire of ETA will have no effect on the next elections in Spain.

The influential spanish Popular Party PP (conservatives in the opposition) is divided about the issue of  how to deal with ETA. Their leader Mariano Rajoy has a moderate position, while haws like Jaime Mayor Oreja say that the model is similar to the one of Kosovo, where they finished gaining independence from Serbia. According to Jaime Mayor, the Basque Parliament shall be composed of basque nationalists (allegedly near ETA) seeking self-determination from Spain.
